Why Proof Needs to Live on the Watch, Not on Paper

The scale of the problem

Counterfeiting is no longer a fringe issue confined to obvious replicas.

In a 2026 report based on hundreds of trade-in evaluations conducted throughout 2025, Gray & Sons reported a continued presence of high-quality counterfeit watches. Rolex, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Omega and Patek Philippe were among the brands most frequently replicated in the pieces presented for inspection.

The company also reported replicas featuring increasingly convincing engravings, weight distribution, serial-number imitations and even cloned movement appearances.

As Gray & Sons specialist Viktoria Peshkur explained:

“Many buyers assume visual inspection is enough, but even experienced collectors can be fooled by today’s replicas.”

That is the core of the challenge: visual similarity is becoming less reliable as proof of authenticity.

Why traditional authentication is struggling

Luxury watch authentication has traditionally relied on a combination of documentation, serial numbers and expert inspection of elements such as the movement, case construction and finishing.

Each remains valuable. But each also has limitations.

Documentation can be lost, forged or separated from the watch as it changes hands. Serial numbers and other visible identifiers can be imitated or copied. And expert inspection depends on identifying inconsistencies between the genuine article and the replica, a task that becomes more demanding as counterfeits improve.

What these methods cannot always provide independently is physical proof tied directly to the object itself.

The grey market adds a second layer of risk

Grey market watches are genuine products sold outside a brand’s authorised distribution network. They are not counterfeit by definition.
